Tree Removal Services
Trees don’t wait for a convenient time to fail. A storm loosens the root ball, a dead limb finally lets go, or a tree that looked fine last spring turns out to be hollow at the base — and suddenly it’s a hazard instead of shade. Marshall’s Tree Service has handled removals like these for property owners across South Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore for more than 30 years, using equipment built for the job: our Grapple Saw Crane lets us cut and lower large limbs and trunks in sections instead of dropping them, which matters when you’re working four feet from a house, a fence, or a power line.
What “tree removal” actually covers
Not every removal looks the same, and pricing and approach change depending on which of these you’re dealing with:
Hazard and dead tree removal. Leaning trees, storm-damaged trees, and trees with visible rot or hollowing get assessed first — we look at lean angle, root exposure, and what’s in the fall zone before we quote or touch anything.
Storm cleanup. After a hurricane or nor’easter, we prioritize trees blocking access, resting on structures, or still under tension (these are the most dangerous — a leaning or hung-up tree can shift without warning).
Lot and land clearing. Preparing a property for construction, a pool, or just reclaiming an overgrown section — we clear efficiently and can pair this with stump grinding and forestry mowing to leave the site usable, not just empty.
Standard residential removal. Healthy trees that are too close to a foundation, interfering with a new addition, or simply no longer wanted.
How the process works
- Free on-site estimate. We look at the tree, the drop zone, access for equipment, and anything nearby (power lines, fences, structures) that changes the approach.
- Permits, if needed. Most removals on private residential property don’t require a city permit — but trees in a Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area (RPA), in the public right-of-way, or subject to an HOA covenant often do. We’ll tell you upfront if yours falls into one of those categories.
- Removal. Sectional cutting with the grapple saw for anything near structures; straight felling where there’s open space to do it faster.
- Cleanup and haul-away. Debris is chipped or hauled out; wood recycled where possible. We don’t leave a job half-cleaned.
- Stump grinding (optional). Ask about bundling this in — it’s easier to schedule together than as a separate visit. → See Stump Grinding
